Baby's First Year | Smash Cake Session
So, there is this relatively new phenomenon happening in young children’s lives called a Smash Cake or Cake Smash Session. Have you heard of this?
If you have been to a baby’s first birthday party, you may have witnessed the baby squishing and smashing a small baby-sized cake while a group of their loved ones are standing around, watching the destruction of that beautiful, tiny cake, cheering on the massacre, and just enjoying the overall show of cake droppings, icing smears, cake tossing, etc. It’s quite the spectacle. If you have not witnessed this, you are missing out! Find someone with an infant and get yourself invited to that baby’s first birthday party, STAT!
So, back to a Smash Cake Session. Many parents have decided that while the party is great, they would also love to have a professional photographer make a set in the theme of their choice, maybe provide the cake to be smashed, and take pictures of the decimation of said cake. Just think, all of that cake and icing up the nose, in the hair, and in the toes…all memorialized in pictures to treasure forever.
All of this to say, I love smash cake sessions! They are so much fun. As soon as I receive a inquiry, I call the parents to chat. We talk about what they wish to accomplish with this session. Is there a theme? Do they want a fruit bath afterwards? Will they be providing their own cake? Asking all of these questions, plus asking if they have any photo inspiration they wish to share with me, helps me to create a set they will connect with. Whether it is butterflies or plants or airplanes, I love them all.
Of course, just because your baby is turning one does not mean you HAVE to do a Smash Cake Session. You can just do balloons and confetti. Or keep it completely and totally bare and just have portraits done of your baby on a plain background with no props at all. Your baby. Your vision. <3
